Abstract

In this paper the aproach to user interfaces for Computer Music applications is taken from a cognitive engineering point of view. As a start, we describe the use of a graph editor for programming signal processors. Illustrated by this example, two main approaches in user interface design are compared: the conversational method and the model world method. Some of their strong and weak points are explained. Direct manipulation as a specific method in a model world interface turns out to be a useful technique for some domains, as is also outlined in other applications of the graph editor.
